AGM vs Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries
AGM costs about 60 percent more and lasts longer, handles deep discharges, and is mandatory on start-stop cars. Everything else can use flooded.

AGM
Best for: Best for start-stop vehicles, cars with big electrical loads or aftermarket audio, cabin or trunk mounting, extreme climates, and vehicles that sit for weeks at a time.
Flooded lead-acid
Best for: Best for older vehicles without start-stop and without a battery management system, where the lower price is real savings rather than a false economy.
What is physically different
Both are lead-acid batteries with the same chemistry and the same 12.6 volt resting target. The difference is what holds the electrolyte.
- A flooded battery has plates suspended in liquid electrolyte. It must sit upright, it vents gas, and vibration slowly shakes material off the plates.
- An AGM battery holds the electrolyte in a fiberglass mat pressed tightly between the plates. It is sealed, works in any orientation, and the mat physically supports the plate material.
- That mat gives AGM lower internal resistance, which is why it delivers more cranking current and accepts a charge faster.
- It also tolerates being drawn down and recharged repeatedly, which is the whole reason start-stop systems require it.
- AGM is more sensitive to overcharging. Its charging voltage window is narrower, which is why the charging system needs to know it is there.
When AGM is not optional
- Automatic start-stop
- The engine restarts dozens of times per trip and each restart is a deep current draw. A flooded battery in this role often fails inside 18 months.
- Battery in the trunk or under a seat
- A sealed battery is required because a flooded one vents hydrogen and acid into the cabin.
- Heavy accessory load
- Aftermarket audio, winches, plow lights, dash cams that record while parked, or a work truck running inverters.
- Cars that sit for weeks
- AGM self-discharges more slowly and survives partial-state-of-charge storage far better.
- Very hot or very cold climates
- AGM tolerates temperature extremes better at both ends, though heat still shortens life on any lead-acid battery.
- The car came with AGM from the factory
- Fit AGM again. The charging strategy was calibrated around it.
The cost arithmetic
A flooded battery is cheaper to buy. Over a decade of ownership the gap is smaller than it looks, because AGM typically lasts longer.

Effectively a wash, before you count the value of one fewer roadside failure. That is why the honest recommendation is not always buy AGM or always save money — it is buy AGM where the vehicle needs it or the use case justifies it, and do not pay the premium on a 2008 sedan that just needs to start.
Buying and fitting
Match the group size exactly
Group size determines physical dimensions and terminal position. The number is printed on the existing battery and in the owner's manual.
Meet or exceed the original cold cranking amps
More CCA never hurts. Less means marginal starting on the first genuinely cold morning.
Check the manufacture date code
A battery sitting on a shelf loses capacity. Buy one made within the last six months — the code is usually a letter for month and a digit for year on a sticker.
Use a memory saver if the car needs it
Some vehicles lose radio codes, window calibration and learned transmission behavior on disconnection. A cheap OBD-port memory saver avoids the reset.
Clean the terminals and cable ends
Corrosion on the cable clamp is a common cause of a new battery that still cranks slowly. Wire-brush both surfaces to bright metal.
Register the battery if the car has a management system
Ask specifically whether the shop is doing this. If you are doing it yourself, many mid-tier scan tools now support it.
Return the old one for the core charge
Lead-acid batteries are among the most recycled products in the country and every retailer takes them back.
