Genuine OEM
Best for: Best for vehicles still under warranty, cars with electronic parking brakes and sensitive stability systems, and anyone who wants zero risk of noise.
Premium aftermarket
Best for: Best for almost everyone else — equal or better stopping, lower price, and a better warranty on most applications.
Economy aftermarket
Best for: Best only for a car being sold shortly or driven very few miles, where you need the cheapest legal stopping distance and nothing more.
What OEM actually means on a brake pad box
The word gets used three different ways at the parts counter, and only one of them means what people think.
- Genuine OEM
- The part in the manufacturer's box, bought from a dealer. Made by a supplier under contract to the automaker.
- OE supplier / OE-equivalent
- The same manufacturer's part in their own box, without the automaker's logo. Frequently the identical pad for 30 to 40 percent less.
- Premium aftermarket
- A major brake specialist's own engineered part for that application. Sometimes better than the original, particularly on vehicles the automaker cost-optimized.
- Economy / value line
- A generic compound applied across many part numbers. Legal, and that is the strongest thing that can be said for it.
Ceramic, semi-metallic and organic
Compound matters more than brand tier once you are above the economy line, and the right compound depends on what the vehicle does.

The common mistake is fitting quiet ceramic pads to a truck that tows. The pads are not defective when they fade on a long descent — they are the wrong compound for the heat load.
Rotors and hardware are part of the decision
Pads and rotors work as a pair. A new pad against a rotor with existing thickness variation will chatter within a few hundred miles, which is the most common reason a brake job comes back — see car shakes when braking.
- Replace or measure the rotors every time. Minimum thickness is stamped on the hat. Many modern rotors are too thin from new to be resurfaced.
- Fit new hardware. Clips, shims and abutment plates cost $15 to $30 an axle and prevent most of the noise complaints attributed to cheap pads.
- Clean and lubricate the slide pins with high-temperature silicone grease. Seized pins destroy pads unevenly and overheat one rotor.
- Match compound front and rear if you are replacing both axles, so the brake balance stays where the engineers put it.
- Never use copper anti-seize on pad contact points. Use brake-specific lubricant only, and keep it off the friction surface.
Bedding in matters more than brand
Friction in a disc brake comes from a thin, even transfer layer of pad material deposited on the rotor face. Laying that layer down correctly is what separates quiet, confident brakes from ones that judder within a month.
Find an empty road
You need somewhere you can brake firmly and repeatedly without traffic behind you.
Six to eight moderate stops from 45 to 10 mph
Firm, steady pressure, not an emergency stop. Do not come to a complete standstill between them.
Do not hold the pedal at a stop while hot
Parking a hot pad against one spot on a hot rotor deposits an uneven patch — the single most common self-inflicted cause of brake shudder.
Drive normally for several minutes to cool
Keep moving with minimal braking so airflow drops the rotor temperature evenly.
Expect full performance after a few hundred miles
New pads reach their designed bite once the transfer layer is fully established.
