Overview
2021 is the last year of the QL-generation Sportage that launched for 2017, and it is a design that was already mature by the time this model year was built. Kia added standard forward collision avoidance and lane keeping across the range for 2021 and left the rest alone. The all-new fifth-generation Sportage arrived for 2023 in the US, so the 2021 is the final, most-sorted version of the old car rather than a first-year design.
The honest headline for this vehicle is its engine family. Both the 2.4L and the 2.0L turbo are Theta II GDI engines — the family at the center of Hyundai and Kia's long-running connecting rod bearing failure campaigns, engine replacement programs and knock sensor detection software updates. By 2021 the manufacturing issues that caused the worst of it had largely been addressed, and this model year is far less affected than 2011–2016 vehicles were. But this is the engine family, and it changes how you should shop for and maintain the car.
- The six-speed automatic is a genuine strength: no CVT, no dual-clutch, no shudder complaints, and a proven torque-converter design.
- Oil level discipline matters more here than on most vehicles, because oil starvation is the mechanism behind the bearing failures.
- Check the brake fluid ABS module recall status. Kia has recalled a range of 2017–2021 vehicles including the Sportage for a hydraulic control unit that can leak and cause an engine compartment fire.
- The 2.0L turbo in the SX is quick but returns noticeably worse fuel economy — about 23 mpg combined against 25 for the 2.4L.
Reliability & running costs
A mixed picture that depends heavily on maintenance history. The transmission, chassis and electronics are unremarkable in the good sense, and a Sportage with documented oil changes and completed campaigns is a reasonable used crossover. But the Theta II GDI engine family carries a real bearing-failure history and an oil consumption tendency, and an example with unknown service records is a genuine gamble. Buy on paperwork, not on mileage.
